Berkshire Hathaway Inc (Berkshire) is a holding company owning subsidiaries engaged in a number of diverse business activities, including insurance and reinsurance, freight rail transportation, utilities and energy, manufacturing, service and retailing.
Berkshire Hathaway was founded in 1839 as a textile manufacturing company established by Oliver Chace. The company was originally known as the Valley Falls Company and was located in Valley Falls, Rhode Island. Over the ensuing years, a number of mergers occurred to form Berkshire Hathaway. In 1962, Warren Buffett began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway and by 1964 became the majority owner of Berkshire Hathaway.
Berkshire, while not owning the following companies outright, has large stakes (as at 31 December 2019) in: Apple Inc (5.7%); American Express Company (18.7%); Bank of America Corp (10.7%); The Bank of New York Mellon Corp (9.0%); The Coca-Cola Company (9.3%); and Moody’s Corporation (13.1%) - not this list is non-exhaustive.
Berkshire Hathaway Inc is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the codes BRK.A (class A shares) and BRK.B (class B shares).
Insurance - The insurance businesses undertake the underwriting of private passenger automobile insurance mainly by direct response methods, the underwriting multiple lines of property and casualty insurance policies for primarily commercial accounts, and the underwriting excess-of-loss, quota-share and facultative reinsurance worldwide. For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, the insurance businesses accounted for 26.59% (USD 67,693 million) of total revenue.
Manufacturing - Manufacturers of numerous products including industrial, consumer and building products, including manufactured housing and related consumer financing. For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, the manufacturing businesses accounted for 24.64% (USD 62,730 million) of total revenue.
McLane Company - Wholesale distribution of groceries and non-food items. For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, the McLane Company accounted for 19.82% (USD 50,458 million) of total revenue.
Service and retail - Providers of numerous services including fractional aircraft ownership programs, aviation pilot training, electronic components distribution, various retailing businesses, including automobile dealerships, and trailer and furniture leasing. For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, the service and retail businesses accounted for 11.58% (USD 29,487 million) of total revenue.
BNSF - Operation of one of the largest railroad systems in North America. For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, BNSF accounted for 9.24% (USD 23,515 million) of total revenue.
Berkshire Hathaway Energy - Regulated electric and gas utility, including power generation and distribution activities and real estate brokerage activities. For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, Berkshire Hathaway Energy accounted for 7.90% (USD 20,114 million) of total revenue.
Corporate, eliminations and other - For the the financial year end 31 December 2019, corporate, eliminations and other revenue accounted for 0.24% (USD 619 million) of total revenue.
