Description

Huawei Investment & Holding Co Ltd (Huawei) is a private Chinese technology company that is controlled by its employees -known as the Union of Huawei Investment & Holding Co Ltd. Huawei provides telecommunications equipment and services, and sells consumer electronics, including smartphones such as the company's Honor and Mate brands. Huawei was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfeiand and is headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China.

When Huawei started operations in 1987, it initially focused on manufacturing phone switches. The company has since expanded its product and service offerings to include building telecommunications networks (through its carrier business), providing operational and consulting services and equipment to enterprises globally (through its enterprise business), and manufacturing communications devices for the consumer market (through its consumer business). As at 31 December 2019, Huawei employed 194,000 people, and stated in its 2019 annual report that over 96,000 of its employees were engaged in research and development.

Huawei is not publicly traded, with the company stating it is "wholly owned by its employees".

Operating Segments:

Consumer business - The consumer business segment provides smartphones, tablets, personal computer, wearable devices, converged home devices, as well as the applications and services on these devices for consumers and businesses. Some of Huawei's most popular consumer tech products include the Honor smartphone brand, the Huawei Mate brand (which includes smartphones and computers), the MediaPad (a tablet device), and the P30 range of smartphones. For the year end 31 December 2019, the consumer business segment accounted for 54.41% (RMB 467,304 million) of total revenue.

Carrier business - The carrier business segment provides products, services and business solutions that include wireless and cloud core network, fixed network, cloud and data centre, and service and software, for global telecommunications carriers - a carrier is a company that is authorised by regulatory agencies to operate a telecommunications system. Huawei enables carriers to develop the key capabilities required for ICT transformation including Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualisation (NFV), cloud data centre and ultra-broadband along with building infrastructure, enabling smart pipes, aggregating digital content, opening up networks, exploring vertical industries, and conducting ICT-oriented architecture transformation. For the year end 31 December 2019, the carrier business segment accounted for 34.55% (RMB 296,689 million) of total revenue.

Enterprise business - The enterprise business segment builds digital infrastructure by using information and communications technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud, big data, Internet of Things, video and data communication to provide products and services that help industries become more digital. Huawei ICT infrastructure and information services are used by multiple industries, including local government, media, mining, utilities, transport and energy, as well as by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and  Managed Service Providers (MSPs). In some regions, the company's solutions and services are delivered through a network of partners and cover enterprise networking, unified communications and collaboration (UC&C), server, storage, cloud computing, data centres, enterprise wireless, network energy and infrastructure services. For the year end 31 December 2019, the enterprise business segment accounted for 10.45% (RMB 89,710 million) of total revenue.
