Description

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul, South Korea. Samsung is comprised of numerous affiliated businesses (including Samsung Heavy Industries), most of them united under the Samsung brand. In Korea, Samsung is referred to as a chaebol, which is similar in definition to a business conglomerate.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (Samsung Electronics) was incorporated in Korea in 1969, and is considered the flagship company of the Samsung group. Samsung Electronics manufactures electronic components such as lithium-ion batteries, semiconductors, chips, image sensors, camera modules and flash memory devices.

Samsung Electronics' industrial affiliates include Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) (one of the world's largest shipbuilders), and Samsung Engineering (SE) and Samsung C&T (SCT) (both of which are construction companies). While these companies (SHI, SE, SCT) bear the Samsung name, they are not considered related parties of the company in accordance with Korean IFRS 1024 Related Party Disclosures, but belong to the same large enterprise group (referred to as Samsung Group) in accordance with the Korean Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act.

In the year ending 31 December 2018, Samsung Electronics generated revenue of KRW 230,400.9 billion (USD 197.7 billion) and declared profit for the period of KRW 21,738.9 billion (USD 18.7 billion).

Operating Segments:

Information technology and mobile communications - The information technology and mobile communications business segment offers handheld products, communication systems, computers and digital cameras. For the financial year end 31 December 2019, the information technology and mobile communications business segment accounted for 46.56% (KRW 107,266,155 million) of total revenue.

Semiconductor - Samsung's semiconductor business is part of its broader Device Solutions business unit. The Device Solutions business unit comprises of memory, system large scale integrated circuit and light emitting diode. For the financial year end 31 December 2019, the semiconductor business segment accounted for 28.19% (KRW 64,939,052 million) of total revenue.

Consumer electronics - The consumer electronics business segment provides cable television, monitor, printer, air-conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines. For the financial year end 31 December 2019, the consumer electronics business segment accounted for 19.43% (KRW 44,756,230 million) of total revenue.

Display - Samsung's Display business is part of its broader Device Solutions business unit. The Device Solutions business unit comprises of memory, system large scale integrated circuit and light emitting diode. For the financial year end 31 December 2019, the display business segment accounted for 13.48% (KRW 31,053,929 million) of total revenue.

Harman - Harman was acquired by Samsung in March 2017. Harman designs and engineers connected products and solutions for automakers, consumers, and enterprises worldwide, including connected car systems, audio and visual products, enterprise automation solutions; and connected services. For the financial year end 31 December 2019, the Harman business segment accounted for 4.37% (KRW 10,077,096 million) of total revenue.
