Tencent Holdings Limited (Tencent) is a Chinese multinational conglomerate holding company whose subsidiaries specialise in various Internet-related services and products, entertainment, artificial intelligence and technology both in China and globally.

Tencent develops and delivers products such as social communication platforms Weixin/WeChat and QQ. In the year ended 31 December 2019, Weixin and WeChat had 1,164.8 million combined monthly active users (MAUs), and QQ had 647.0 million smart device MAUs. Tecent states that is "social communications platforms, Weixin and QQ, represent the largest social communities in China in terms of MAU."

Tencent has focused on expanding its digital content, making a number of acquisitions of gaming companies in order to take advantage of the growing gaming market. Gaming acquisitions include: Grinding Gear Games (May 2018), Supercell (June 2016), Miniclip (February 2015), ZAM (March 2012), and Riot Games (February 2011). Tecent also makes large and numerous investments in gaming companies, having made investments in global leaders such as Epic Games (creator of Fortnite) and Supercell (creator of Clash of Clans, which Tecent acquired a controlling 84.3% stake in, in June 2016, for a reported USD 8.6 billion).

Tecent was founded in November 1998 by Ma Huateng, Chen Yidan, Zhang Zhidong, Xu Chenye, and Zeng Liqing.

Tencent Holdings Limited is incorporated in the Cayman Islands, with its registered office located at Cricket Square, Hutchins Drive, P.O. Box 2681, Grand Cayman KY1-1111, Cayman Islands. The company's headquarters are located at Tencent Binhai Towers, No. 33 Haitian 2nd Road, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, China.

Tencent is traded on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong under the code 700.

Operating Segments:

Value-added services (VAS) - VAS primarily includes the provision of online games and social networks services. Online games revenues are mainly derived from the sale of in-game virtual items, and social networks revenues are mainly derived from sales of virtual products such as subscriptions, and games revenues attributable to social networks business. Tencent offers virtual products/ items to users on its online platforms. The VAS fees are paid directly by end users mainly via online payment channels. For the year end 31 December 2019, the value-added services segment accounted for 53.01% (RMB 199,991 million) of total revenue.

FinTech and business services - The FinTech and business services segment primarily consists of payment, wealth management and other FinTech services, and cloud services and other enterprise-facing activities such as Tencent's Smart Retail initiative. For the year end 31 December 2019, the FinTech and business services segment accounted for 26.86% (RMB 101,355 million) of total revenue.

Online advertising - Online advertising revenues are mainly derived from media advertisements, social and others advertisements, and depend on the placement of advertising properties and inventories. The company signs advertising contracts to establish the prices and advertising services to be provided based on different arrangements, including display-based advertising (the display of ads for an agreed period of time), and performance-based advertising. For the year end 31 December 2019, the online advertising segment accounted for 18.12% (RMB 68,377 million) of total revenue.

Others - The others segment consists of the investment in, production of and distribution of, films and television programmes for third parties, copyrights licensing, merchandise sales and various other activities. For the year end 31 December 2019, the others segment accounted for 2.01% (RMB 7,566 million) of total revenue.
